A Guide To Blogging
I’ve mentioned a few cool plugins recently related to showing your appreciation for those that take the time to leave a comment on your blog – well I’ve just come across another one which I’ll mention in a minute but I also wanted to take the time to remind you all of another plugin that helps fight spam – as much as all bloggers no doubt love to receive comments at the same time we all have a loathing for the comment spammers; particularly for me those that try to hide the fact that they are spammers – they make what you initially might think is a worthwhile comment – until you realise that they’ve left that same comment on every other post in your blog (and on your other blogs as well) though I do have to almost laugh at those that say sorry with a sad smile before listing a tonne of links.
Anyway – as I’ve mentioned in the past when it comes to spam – all my comments need to be moderated – I use Akismet and I’d like to point out Spam Karma to others as well. Spam Karma is meant to stop all automated blog spam.
Some more link love with CommentLuv
Another great way to show your appreciation to your commentors is to use the CommentLuv plugin. This plugin is easy and a great idea. Anytime someone leaves a comment on your blog their latest blog post will show up underneath their comment.
Whenever a comment is left on your post CommentLuv will visit the feed of the comment author and attempt to grab the title and link to their latest blog post. I’m trying this one out now – and let you know how it goes for me. But take a look for yourself the download page goes into further detail and covers some tips if you need any help.

This is a great idea. I wish my blogspot could have it. All blogs should have this plugin.
Another great one is so commentors can edit their comments for a few minutes after pressing the submit button – good for fixing spelling.

From what I’ve been reading lately as far as blogspot is concerned they’re not making it easy at all when it comes to comments from those that aren’t blogspot bloggers
It is not just Blogger the company, a lot of blogspot blogs click the option to only allow comments from blogger members – I can’t see why you would want that, isn’t the idea to let anyone read and comment? I let anyone have there say and if it is spam I just delete it then – no hassle and the blog is more inviting then. Well thats my thought.

I agree – while anyone can comment here they are moderated in the sense that I’m told when a comment has been left and I can either let it stay (or allow if a first timer etc) or spam or delete it.
From what I can gather with blogger where in the past I could leave a comment and say link it back to this blog (wordpress) at least on most blogger blogs – I can no longer do that unless I have an OpenID or a blogger ID etc.
I admit to not looking into it in great detail because at this stage it’s not something that has really affected me.
Though, if for example, I wanted to leave a comment on your blog you linked to here it either has to be anonymous (no link) or I need a google/blogger id so in that case aren’t blogger making it a whole lot harder for blogs to be interactive?
I don’t moderate first, I get an email and I check it out – if it is spam it gets deleted… but I don’t get many comments at all.
I guess everyone will need to put their site addrees as a link in the comment from now on. I find it crazy that blogger has taken the option away and you have to be a member or anon. I actually don’t like blogger, it is awkward to use, and I find the free wordpress much better but I wanted to try adverts out a little.

When I first started blogging I used blogger but once I tried WordPress I never looked back. There are free hosts around that allow you to install wordpress either via a simple click (fantastico) or via ftp if downloaded from wordpress.com – which means you can add your chosen ads/income stream to them.

You’re welcome – my choice of free host would be freehostia.com though there are plenty of others around. As I mentioned in that post though, for me my own host and domain is definitely the way to go – that way you can have a variety of different blogs – all on sub-domains etc

I have used Spam karma for a couple of years now and I thinks it’s great. It’s gets 99% of my scam and it has made blogging enjoyable again.
As for commentluv, I have just installed it on two of my newest blogs hoping it will generate more comments. I have my fingers crossed

Does Commenluv work with blogspot? It says it does but I am having a hard time with it.
Erin – I’ve never tried CommentLuv with Blogspot but based on what I know from using a blogger blog in the past I’d have to say no it doesn’t – of course I could be wrong – perhaps hit the plugin’s main page and query it there?

But nowadays I found that most of the bloggers use “no-follow” for the link from CommentLuv. I would suggest them disable the CommentLuv since they use “nofollow”, it’s meaningless…

That is actually a great idea. Bundling the two plugins together seems like the deal. I never heard about the spam karma one. Thanks for the heads up.
This is a great plugin so that others can catch headlines of other blogs they may be interested in.
To start earning money with your blog, initially use Google Adsense but gradually as your traffic increases, keep adding more and more money making programs to your site.

Does this work with Blogspot? I know the question was asked, but did not see an answer.
wordpress does allow the user to approve or spam any comment. Blog Commenting is important no doubt for all of us on the internet, but it can be done tastefully. Leaving unique comments about the “actual” blog post would be appreciated in most cases. Comment luv is a great plug in for those that have real blogs and post real posts
