Web hosting is a service provided by a company that owns servers and server space that you website or blog can be accessed from via the internet. Everyone has different hosting needs, but, everyone has the exact same need of finding a great hosting provider. This is crucial to your success on line. It doesn’t matter if you are running a blog or an ecommerce site, reliable web hosting is a definite must!
A company that hosts websites maintains the site on a computer that can be accessed through the Internet. These companies may host thousands of websites on many different servers in a building called a data center. These data centers let the hosting company maintain the security and cool temperatures around their valuable computers.
For all intents and purposes, you can think of web hosting simply as renting space on the internet. It is a place that you are going to build your new home “online”. Because of this, it is vital that you find a good neighborhood that is safe and secure. You also want a good landlord who will live up to his end of the contract that is in place between the two of you.
There are many different types of hosting solutions out there today. Each one is appropriate for different circumstances. Some of the options that are available to you are free hosting, shared hosting, dedicated hosting, and co-location hosting. Each of the options just listed will allow you to get a website on the internet, but not every option will meet your individuals wants and needs.
If you like the sound of free hosting, this might be a really good idea for small websites. One downside to free hosting is that the web host will place ads on your site to help offset the cost of operating and maintaining their servers. Shared hosting is very affordable for those individuals or companies who are on a budget. The only downside is that you are limited to disk space and bandwidth. This too is a great solution for smaller websites.
If you are planning on having a bigger website or using a lot of disk space and bandwidth, you are going to want to go with a dedicated server. Sites that have a lot of traffic definitely need this kind of service to accommodate their growing business. Co-location is also a great solution for bigger websites or businesses. Co-location is when a company purchases their own server and houses it at a data center that is owned by an independent company.
So the million dollar question is, what should you be looking for in a hosting provider? The answer is probably not what you are looking for Everyone has different requirements when it comes to web servers. There are some standards that really make a huge difference between great and not so great hosting companies.
You should always begin by taking a look at the service record of the company. How reliable are they? Do they have a good uptime record? How is their customer support? Each of these things will help you know if you are selecting a good hosting provider. By doing your research, you can save a lot of money and get tremendous value!

Choosing between a free and a dedicated web hosting really depends on what the website is for. I personally choose a free web hosting service, because my site is just a personal one anyway, and I don’t blog for a living.
